The Roots of
Maracatu

Maracatu is a traditional style of Afro-Brazilian percussion and music originating from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil. With roots tracing back to the coronation ceremonies of enslaved African kings and queens during the colonial era, Maracatu is one of Brazil's most powerful and culturally significant musical traditions.

The massive alfaia drums — played with heavy wooden mallets — produce the deep, thunderous bass that defines the Maracatu sound. Layered with the sharp crack of the caixa (snare), the metallic pulse of the agogô (cowbell), and the shaking of the ganzá and abê (shakers), Maracatu creates a hypnotic, polyrhythmic wall of sound that moves bodies and stirs souls.

In Recife and Olinda, Maracatu is a centrepiece of Carnaval celebrations, with groups called nações (nations) parading through the streets in elaborate costumes, carrying symbolic standards, and honouring their African heritage. TallBeat carries this tradition forward, bringing the authentic sounds and spirit of Maracatu to audiences across North America — elevated, quite literally, to new heights on stilts.

Our Story

TallBeat Afro-Brazilian Drum Troupe was founded in Toronto in 2013 as MaracaTALL by Brazilian-born Porto Brothers. Today, TallBeat brings together Brazilian-born and Canadian performers in a vibrant fusion of rhythm, movement, and spectacle.

Hala, one of the original members, helped shape the troupe by combining her professional stilt-walking expertise with her authentic Brazilian drumming experience, co-creating Toronto's only stilt-drumming ensemble. She deepened her connection to Brazilian music and language while living in Bahia, Brazil, and previously performed for three years in a Samba-Raggae and Afro-Axé style batucada in Montreal (2004–2007).

Following a standout debut season in 2014, the troupe toured internationally at the Dubai Shopping Festival in January 2015. Widely known in the Toronto Maracatu community, TallBeat remains one of the most distinctive and sought-after acts in festival and event entertainment.
